Yet another good year for reading, with some truly excellent titles, though perhaps not as many as I had hoped. I have also been rather slack with my reviews and will endeavour to write them as I go in the coming year, rather than leave it until I have forgotton the details!
Five particular books stand out as my favourites of the year:
Skellig - David Almond
Looking for Alaska - John Green
What I Was - Meg Rosoff
Eleanor Rigby - Douglas Coupland
The Thirteenth Tale - Diane Setterfield
David Almond, Meg Rosoff and John Green have gone straight into my all time favourite young adult and children's author category!
It also seems that I have begun the last two years on a real high, with my first book of the year ending up as one of my favourites...no pressure for 2010 then!

I am glad you had such a good year of reading, Mariel. You definitely read some great books. I've only read one of your top five books, that being the Setterfield book. I really want to try John Green one of these days.
I hope you have a wonderful New Year filled with lots of good reading.
I have read all five of your favourite reads. :) Eleanor Rigby didn't interest me as much, but I agree on the other four!
Good list! Many are on mine and many on my to do! You also gave me some titles to look into. Many thanks and here's to a brand new year in books 2010!

Literary Feline - I was so suprised by how much I fell for Alaska, and Paper Towns is a very close second. I do hope you like him too! Happy New Year :)
Kailana - I think Skellig may pip the others to the top slot!
Lisa Marie - Happy reading for 2010, hope you find some great reads.
Naida - I think you'll love it!
I just wanted to pop in really quickly and say thanks so much for the holiday swap gift, I'll post up my swag later at my own blog! I got it today at work and I love it, including the v posh wrapping paper. Soul Eater = awesome! And I am very much a candle person, picking up all those lovely scents wherever I can. Thanks so much again :)
Ooh, what a great list of books. I adored Looking For Alaska. Elenor Rigby was such a beautiful book. David Almond has become one of my favourite authors and I've recently devoured What I Was. You and I have some great taste in books :)
Jodie - You are most welcome! I was so excited when I found the wrapping paper, it looked all regal and posh! I may have squealed :) I really hope you enjoy Soul Eater...it was the book that got me completely hooked on the series.
Clover - We do indeed! Enjoy your little stash of David Almond books :) We must continue recommending these great books for one another!

PS Eva gave a review of the Simon Armitage transl of Sir Gawain, what did you think of it? Perhaps I should go read your review!! lol
Susan - Yep, 2009 is going to be hard to top! I loved Sir Gawain, so evocative with some great storytelling. I'd like to reread Beowulf this year.
