Read for: YA Challenge
To continue my short reviews, I'll get straight to the point!
Once Upon a Time in the North is another book set in the world of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. In the same format as Lyra's Oxford, this delightful little hardback is actually a prequel. The story follows aeronaut Lee Scoresby as he meets Iorek Byrnison for the first time.
Unlike Lyra's Oxford, Once Upon a Time in the North captured my interest from the very beginning. The fact that neither Lee nor Iorek were the most important characters in the trilogy actually made the book even better reading. It is often the minor characters that intrigue me and this was especially the case with Scoresby. Very little is revealed about him during the series, aside from his character and friendship with the armoured bear, little is told of his back story. A daring choice of follow up installment, I do not know if this was a particularly big hit or not, although I really enjoyed it. Beautifully packaged, the book also contains a game and some letters from Lyra herself.
Still earmarked with Pullman's excellent literary style, though not bogged down in the religious aspects that were a bit much for some in the later books, Once Upon a Time is an adventure through and through. This would certainly be understood if read with no prior knowledge of the series, though anyone who desires a little more insight into Scoresby's history and the tale of how he met Byrnison, will likely find the story more satisfying. As always, Scoresby's daemon, Hester, is a joy to read about and is most certainly my favourite daemon in the series. Sadly, as is often the case with such novellas, not enough is revealed and the reader is left wanting more.
Where is the Book of Dust I ask?

Yes! I'd love to see a Book of Dust. Have yet to read this one, but I'm looking forward to it as I'd love to learn more about Lee Scoresby! He seems like a fascinating guy.
Nymeth - They were talking about the release of the Book of Dust years ago when I was working as a bookseller, but still no sign :(
Clover - I think you'd love it, and it is an adorable little keepsake. But I would still prefer the Book of Dust!!
I enjoyed your review. I read all ofPhilip Pullman's His Dark Materials books and really enoyed them! I am looking forward to reading Once Upon a Time in the North!
I didn't even know that Phillip Pullman was continuing his wonderful little franchise; I quite enjoyed the His Dark Materials Trilogy. I will definitely have to give this one a look. Lee was one of my favorite characters in the books.
Hi Mariel! I came across your blog when it turned up on the blogger site. I enjoyed reading this review, mostly because I was surprised Pullman had written something of the series except the trilogy. And I love Lee's character, this should be an interesting read. Thanks for bringing this book into note. I hope it has released in India :)

Ah, I knew Philip Pullman had written other books that were related to the His Dark Materials triology, but I have still yet to read them. The triology are some of my all-time favourite books, and I am determined to read Once Upon A Time In The North and Lyra's Oxford sometime.
I liked your review.
This managed to fly under the radar in the UK too, but is definitely worth a read if you are fans of the series.

Agreed. The Book of Dust would be awesome. I agree that he's better when he's writing his story rather than trying to be the anti-Lewis.
A very nice Blog.
I also have my own blog here.
