So my plan to do very few challenges this year is off to flying start as I have succumbed to yet another...This is different however. After getting back from a short holiday in Malta, I spent New Year with my best friend and fellow book/stationery nut, Rhinoa, mostly chilling out, playing with the kitties and talking about books. We are always recommending and buying books for each other, and this year she suggested doing a similar challenge that she partakes with Nymeth, choosing 5 books for the other to read. This turned out to be harder than either of us thought. My list for Rhinoa was well over 20 and I had to be quite ruthless to cut it down to only 5...and they are:
The Gift -Alison Croggon (my favourite fantasy book and I've been harping on about it for months!)
Lamb - Christopher Moore (if a book ever gets you close to wetting yourself with laughter, its this one!)
The Hours - Michael Cunningham (great book, great film, you made need a hankie..)
The Secret History - Donna Tartt (stunningly original debut)
Cry of the Icemark - Stuart Hill (fabulous kids fantasy romp with vampires, giant snow leopards and werewolves, and one of the books I inflicted on Rhinoa for her birthday this year!)
Rhinoa has selected the following 5 for me:
The Happy Prince - Oscar Wilde
Moon Called - Patricia Briggs
Piece by Piece - Tori Amos
Lolita - Vladimir Nabokov
The Last Unicorn - Peter S Beagle
I'm really looking forward to this challenge as we know each others tastes scarily well and Rhinoa is very well read. I'm especially looking forward to Lolita. Watch this space...

good luck with the challenge, looks like a great list of books.

You both picked some great books! I can't wait to see what you think of Beagle.
Kailana and I are doing something similar but only one pick at a time, mainly because my brain hurts trying to do pick more than that! LOL!
Loved Moon Called (and that whole series) can't wait to see what you thought about it!a
I loved Moon Called, too!
ha ha, and Marg, I don't know about your brain hurting, but I know that I am terrible at following lists. One at a time is a much better method!
Christopher Moore and Michael Cunningham are two of my favorite authors, which makes me think I may have to try the others on your list. Do you recommend The Gift for fantasy fans only, or does it make a good crossover book for those of us not usually drawn to fantasy?
Sounds fun, Mariel! I can't wait to hear about your and Rhinoa's reviews on the books you recommended to each other!
I loved The Hours too, but it's the only one out of the 10 that I've read. I look forward to hearing what you both think of your books.
Naida - Thanks, I'm excited about them!
Nymeth - Thanks, looking forward to Beagle, but unfortunately my library doesn't have the Last Unicorn, so it'll be a while!
Marg - Yeah I was a little terrified of how many I came up with off the top of my head. We already have enough for the next 2 years!
Ladytink & Kailana - I actually had never heard of Patricia Briggs, but rhinoa knows my tastes, so I'm sure I'll like her!
Ali - The Gift is very reminiscent of Lord of the Rings, but is a very entertaining story (first in a series of 4) that I would recommend even to people who don't usually read fantasy. I'd be interested to hear what you think of it. Christopher Moore cracks me up, have you read Fluke?!
Melody - Thanks!
tanabata - My enjoyment of The Hours really suprised me and I love it when that happens.
Fluke is my absolute favorite Moore book! That and Lamb. Once he gets going on the vampires and stuff, I have a harder time relating. But I like that he's funny enough to pull me into a genre I wouldn't normally read.
Maybe I'll try The Gift. Thanks!
I am so glad we decided to do this challenge and I am really looking forward to reading the books you selected. I hope you enjoy the 5 I picked out for you and you enjoy the challenge enough to do it again in 2010!
Yay! I'll start refining my list for next year then...may take me a while to narrow it down to 5!
