Welcome to your next stop on the great Blog Advent Tour 2008 as organised by the ingenious Kailana from The Written World and Marg from Reading Adventures!
I thought I would share a little something about my build-up to the winter holidays this year. I live in Norwich, a mediaeval city on the east coast of the UK. The city is not very large, but famous for its 11th century Cathedral and Castle, old markets, fairs, street theatre, crafts, infamous Colmans mustard and of course for our most famous resident...the great Stephen Fry! I have only been living here for two and a half years, but love the history and culture the city has to offer, and this is the first time that I have been here during the build-up to Christmas.

Every year the city hosts numerous festive events and I have had the pleasure of attending both the Mediaeval Fayres over the past two weekends, one at the Dragon Hall and the other in the cloisters of the Cathedral. Both were transformed by the presence of stallholders in traditional costumes selling mediaeval style wares, such as pottery, woodwork, games and jewellery. Minstrels, jugglers, fire eaters and storytellers graced the halls, passages and cloisters, with the smell of hog roast and mulled wine permeating the brisk winter air. I was particularly taken by the traditional ash longbows, but I did not have enough silver coin and had to be pleased enough with a beautiful old flowerpress, antique wooden jewellery box and mediaeval dice game in a small leather pouch. Here is a little taste of the Historic Christmas Fayre in the Cathedral.

And the final highlights to my mediaeval winter celebrations..a trip to the theatre to see a lovely performance of Charles Way's play Merlin and the Cave of Dreams and a visit to the somewhat drafty Cathedral to see the fabulous group the Mediaeval Baebes play their best performance yet (in my humble opinion), with the audience sipping mulled wine in an effort to stop shivering. I was even graced with my favourite song (which brought more than one tear to my eye) and the lovely ladies signed a copy of their new album for me. Drums, flutes, strings and beautiful lyrics sung in mediaeval latin, english and welsh in a stunning mediaeval setting. I do not know how I am going to top this next year!

A very Merry Yule/Christmas/Hanukah (etc etc delete as appropriate) to you all! Thanks for stopping by, and don't forget to visit the other blogs on today's advent blog tour:

It is like a fairy tale. What a wonderful place to live.
Mariel,
I loved your blog and today`s post. The pictures are just incredible. How lucky of you to live at Norwich.
I have written today also at the Advent Blog Tour invited by Marg. It has been a great idea and a great way to meet talent from around the world.
I am including your blog in my blogroll; I simply cannot avoid it!
Merry Christmas and nice meeting you.
WOW! That looks like so much fun! And I'm heading over to check out the music you mentioned ... it sounds like something I'd really enjoy.
Amazing photos!!! Thank you so much for the virtual tour, Mariel.
Wow, I so want to go there some year for Christmas! Thanks for joining in!
I always thought that I would end up going to Norwich at some point when I lived in the UK because I worked in Sheffield for Norwich Union (as it was known then) but it never happened! Looking at your photos I wish it had!
I've never been to Norwich, it looks like a beautiful city. Love the Mediaval Babes! I haven't listened to them in a while, so thanks for the reminder. (So much music, so little time when my kids don't have other ideas...)
Not fair! Not only are those pics gorgeous, but Stephen Fry lives there?!?! I would totally freak him out by stalking him endlessly and trying to get him to do my voicemail message, lol.
Thanks for the lovely pictures Mariel. I visited Norwich about 30 years ago, so they revived some memories. Merry Christmas
wow, what beautiful photos. It is like a fairy tale.
Beautiful post!

I'm with everyone else who loved your photos. You've taken some gorgeous shots. The Christmas Fayre sounds like a ton of fun, too!
Wow, thanks for the lovely post and the beautiful pics, Mariel! I'm hoping to visit UK in the near future.
Krissi - I'm not usually a fan of cities, but Norwich is so old yet vibrant that I really love it!
LaClau - Thanks for stopping by! I've been working my way through all the advent blogs, but there are so many, its taking me a while!
Heather - I can't recommend them enough, though they truly are best live, so keep your eye out for them!
Nymeth - I've really grown to love this place, so its nice to share. Thanks!
Kailana - Thanks for organising it, I had fun!
Marg - I think Norwich Union still runs the city! Everyone here either works for them or has a family member who does..its kinda creepy actually!
Ali - They're new album is great and I think they'll be doing another international tour for it. Enjoy!
Eva - Ideal dinner guest or what! He's actually in the local panto of Sleeping Beauty right now...playing the mirror! I am tempted..
Kerrie - Thanks. The place may have changed a bit, new shopping malls and a fabulous new library! But the city still has a character to it.
Naida - I thought so. I wanted to frolic about the cloisters in my own mediaeval gown (yes I do have one, in forest green velvet and made by a former Baebe!)...sigh.
Memory - Thanks! I had a really great time.
Melody - Thanks. If you are coming to the UK you should definitely try and make it to Cambridge and/or Norwich..so many things to do and see!
Wow, what a beautiful city!
Playing catch up on the Advent Tour.
Merry Christmas!
What a wonderful post! Thanks so much for sharing your Norwich Christmas. I absolutely loved seeing all the pictures even though it really makes me miss England, and Cambridge especially.
