R.I.P. III Challenge

I've only been blogging a few months, and thus have not had the pleasure of participating in one of Carl V's R.I.P. Challenges. This years challenge will have various related activities, so keep an eye on Stainless Steel Droppings as the challenge progresses. R.I.P. III runs from September 1st through October 31st, 2008, and there are three possible variations. There are three perils to choose from, and the challenge is to read between 1 and 4 books from the following subgenres:

Mystery.
Suspense.
Thriller.
Dark Fantasy.
Gothic.
Horror.
Supernatural.

Instead of a fixed list of books, each participant should create a pool of books that they would like to select from. This pool can be books they already want to read and you can get ideas from other participants' pools. Reviews should be posted on the R.I.P.ing Yarns website.

I have chosen Peril the Second, and will be reading two (or more!) of the following books in the subgenres:

The Master and the Margarita - Mikhail Bulgakov
The Shadow of the Wind - Carlos Ruis Zafon
Smoke and Mirrors - Neil Gaiman
Nocturnes - John Connolly
The Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger - Stephen King
The Thirteenth Tale - Diane Setterfield
The Collector - John Fowles
Fragile Things - Neil Gaiman
Rebecca - Daphne Du Maurier
The Bloody Chamber - Angela Carter

So whatever you choose, enjoy!!

Great list! I've Smoke and Mirrors in my pile so I can't wait to read your review on it. I hope you'll enjoy reading The Thirteenth Tale and Fragile Things because I think they're great!

I wish I'd thought of including The Master and the Margarita and Nocturnes! Those are two books I really want to read. But it's not like my list isn't huge enough as it is :P I hope you enjoy all your picks!

Carl's challenges are the best. I hope you have fun! I would participate, but I'm in reading challenges rehab right now.

You've got a nice selection to choose from. I really enjoyed The Shadow of the Wind, and The Thirteenth Tale. And Rebecca is a classic. Have fun with your choices!

Cool some good looking choices. I hope to read some Angela Carter next month and Coraline by Gaiman. I hope you enjoy Smoke and Mirrors if you get around to it.

Hello Mariel, thanks for your message, pleased to meet you.. :) what an interesting lot of books here. I shall have to investigate some of them. I was eyeing The Master & Margarita recently too. And glad to see some Angela Carter in the list.
All the best to you
Rima

melody - I loved the description of smoke and mirrors, I couldn't not pick it up!

nymeth - I borrowed the Master and the Margarita from a friend over a year ago and its still sitting on my shelf. Oh the shame!

naida - Thanks and happy reading to you too!

dewey - I empathise with your challenge rehab!! I'm in book buying rehab at the moment on a self-imposed ban. I'd like to say self-enforced, but I'm doing a pretty poor job so far..bought two books last week!

tanabata - Rebecca isn't a book that I would have picked up myself, but so many people have recommended it to me!

rhinoa - I'm really looking forward to Smoke and Mirrors and The Bloody Chamber. I'd rather be reading than at work right now!

rima - greetings and thanks! Unfortunately so many books and so little time!

I don't know how I missed commenting on this right away, but I'm sorry and let me tell you that I'm thrilled to have you aboard. It was so fun to pop over to your site today and see that lush vegetation in your header. Makes me feel so wonderful!!!

I'm thrilled with your list. I especially cannot wait to read your reviews as many of these are either favorites or books on my to be read pile.
