I'd been having a lovely time on my holidays, walking, canoeing and exploring the history around my home until last weekend, when sadly my grandfather passed away. He's had two very difficult years of illness after losing my grandmother, and although I will miss him terribly, I am truly glad that he will not be suffering any more. I've spent the past few days blubbing on and off, partly due to losing him, and partly due to the book I've been reading that has really touched a nerve..The Ice Queen by Alice Hoffman. Very much about loss and finding joy in life, this really hit a sore spot with me, but in a good way. Watch this space for a review. So I've decided to sort myself out. I'm really going to get on top of this job situation, and make sure that I get to spend more time at home where I can actually have a life and do all the things that my grandfather has been inspiring me to do since childhood. I'm torn at the moment between disappearing off to Africa for a year or so, travelling round and working on conservation projects..or buying a house somewhere in the country and getting dogs and cats and chickens!!! Two very different things, but I want to do both! Any suggestions?!

Sorry to hear about your grandfather.
I travelled when I was younger and I will never regret it, but there are definite advantages to doing both. Good luck with your decision making.
I am so sorry for your loss. Both of your ideas sound wonderful. Maybe you can do both? My prayers and thoughts are with you.
Good luck-I completely understand being town and having to figure things out. You could always buy a house in Africa and raise African dogs and cats and chickens. ;)
The way I see it (I'm still really young, so I'm speaking from talking with mentors rather than direct experience), the older you get the more difficult it is to be spontaneous. So if you really want to travel around Africa, it might be better to do it now. As long as you know what you're getting into!
So sorry to hear about your grandfather Mariel :( Funny how loss can inspire new life in us sometimes. I'm sure he'd be proud of you no matter what you decide to do. I'd go for the country house with dogs and chickens ;)
I am biased and say buy a place in the country with animals galore because then I get to see you more. Honestly though your life seems to have been so scattered recently. You have been away so much and haven't really had a chacne to settle at anything due to your rubbish job/boss. Why not try standing still for a little bit rather than always chasing after something intangible.
Call me if you ever want/need to.
