Felbrigg Hall

Continuing my summer visits of old stately homes, two weeks ago I visited Felbrigg Hall, a 17th century country house and estate in north Norfolk, close to Blickling Hall. Also owned by the National Trust, Felbrigg is renowned for its unaltered (and somewhat mishmash) architecture. The estate covers over 1700 acres of parkland, including the 520 acre Great Wood, which I spent much of the afternoon walking through. It was a really unusual house, with a lot of character and a lovely cosy library compared to the grandeur I expect from most stately houses. We did the usual tour of the house followed by a lovely afternoon tea and cake (!) and a long walk in the woods.

But perhaps the best part was intentionally getting ourselves a little lost on the way there and back, through some of the most confusing and windiest lanes I have seen in a long time, all the while discovering some of Norfolk’s loveliest hidden villages.

Both sets of photos are absolutely wonderful. I am so jealous, and of course happy for you, considering that not only are the things you are seeing quite beautiful, but getting to see Kate Rusby and Karine Polwart. Ah! They are so amazing! I have been listening to Underneath the Stars for days now and I was just watching videos from both singers on You Tube a few days back. Love em'!

Amazing photos - I'm glad you are having such a good time. I seem to be taking many vicarious vacations since I joined the blogging world. :-)

Carl - Thanks! It was a really fun spontaneous day out, but full of my favourite things; history, nature, good music and good food! I have only just discovered Karine Polwart, but have already fallen in love with her music. And I've been so lucky to see Kate perform twice this year, though she is taking a break now as her baby is due any day. I recommend Kathryn Tickell, more music than singing, but so inspiring!

Darla - I feel the same, I have seen and read about so many fantastic places through other people's blogs! Watch this space for more such posts!
