Although I am steering clear of new challenges and focussing on my ever-growing TBR pile, how can I resist Carl's RIP IV Challenge. The R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril challenge is designed to get us reading many subgenres:
Mystery.
Suspense.
Thriller.
Dark Fantasy.
Gothic.
Horror.
Supernatural.
RIP IV runs from September 1st to October 31st, but you can't start any time from now. Sign up at Carl's blog and post your reviews here.
There are many levels of participation available. I shall be joining Peril the Second and reading two books of any length from any subgenre.
There is no commitment to a pre-selected list, but my reading pool to choose from includes:
The Thirteenth Tale - Diane Setterfield
The Road - Cormac McCarthy
American Gods - Neil Gaiman
Dead Until Dark - Charlaine Harris
We Never Talk About My Brother - Peter S. Beagle
Shadow of the Wind - Carlos Ruis Zafon
The Collector - John Fowles
Enjoy!

I loved The Thirteenth Tale! I hate the cover you have in the sidebar, though... I seriously need to read American Gods and Shadow of the Wind. Two books I have been saying forever that I am going to read and never actually do. The Road was really good, too. I read that last year. :)
I think you'll really enjoy The Thirteenth Tale
its simply delicious!
shadow of the wind was overrated - but you may think differently! (i'm in the minority opinion here)

I just can't resist this one! Glad you're joining too, Mariel!
I loved The Thirteenth Tale! I can't wait to see what you think of it.
Great list! I really loved The Thirteenth Tale and Shadow of the Wind adn also really enjoyed The Road and Dead Until Dark. I really should reborrow American Gods! I did have it out at one stage but had to return it to the library unread.
Kailana - I'm absolutely loving The Thirteenth Tale, already halfway through it! The cover with the books is so much better but only available on the hard back over here. A friend lent me American Gods, so I really should get on with it soon! And I need to read The Road before the film (eventually!) comes out.
Aimee - I love it already, thanks! I've seen mixed reviews of Shadow of the Wind, but its about books so cant go too wrong i hope?!
Melody - Thanks, glad you have joined up. I look forward to seeing what you end up reading for it!
Marg - Thanks. All the books on my list have been recommended by so many people, I don't think I can go wrong! I am terrible with the library...my eyes are way bigger than time allows!
i am giving yet another vote for the Thirteenth Tale!! I will be rereading it for the challenge.. yes, it's that good!
Resistance is futile....oh wait, that's the Sci Fi Experience. Anyway, so glad you are joining us this year. Allow me to be on the bandwagon, banging the drum for Thirteenth Tale. I understand why they change cover art for different editions sometimes, but that cover is a very odd choice for this book. Doesn't fit at all, not with the mood of the story anyway.
But back to the challenge...again, I'm glad you are joining us. Thanks!
The Road is a wonderfully difficult read. It is very disturbing but well worth the effort I think. I've also decided to join in this challenge - it's been a long while since I've joined a challenge and I've not been posting too many blogs lately either but I'd like to get back into the swing of things and this is just the way to do it!
good luck and happy reading :O)

I've been told Peter S. Beagle is a great writer. I need to read one of his books.
Yay! Nothing like being away from bloggingland for a while and then coming back to discover that it's RIP time again! Off to Carl's blog to sign up...
Btw I listened to the audiobook of The 13th Tale, and I recommend it. Different readers do the voices of the story-within-a-story narrators. Very evocative!
Very good choices! Happy reading :)
Hello~
Reading books on gothic, dark fantasty and horror does make me nervouse (lol). But I just started reading "The Thirteenth Tale" and I'm so intrigued and really enjoying it so far. I'm only on page 36, ARRIVAL, but it's so good! I truly didn't think I would enjoy it so much, but I do. A friend recommended it and dared me to read it.
But after reading and enjoying "The Help", I didn't think I would like it as much as I do so far.
How are you like it so far?
Love your blog and I'm impressed by all the informaiton you have. I'm thinking about starting a second blog that is partly dedicated to books, articles, different newspapers and their writers. They are so many writers I follow in some of the major magazines and newspapers it would be nice to blog about them.
Take good care :)
Happy Reading!
Gayla
I hope you enjoy this challenge as much as I did last year; have fun!
That's a great pool of books to choose from. I really enjoyed The Thirteenth Tale, The Road, and The Shadow of the Wind so would definitely recommend those. I'm looking forward to reading my first Peter S. Beagle book, A Fine and Private Place, for the challenge. Happy reading!
Deslily - I loved The Thirteenth Tale! Another pleasantly surprising read of this year, watch this space for a review.
Carl - Touche! I agree the cover is a little odd, I do prefer the other editions out there. I'm already enjoying the challenge, thanks!
Heather - I'm looking forward to The Road, though with a little trepidation. I know how brutal it is supposed to be. I hope you enjoy the challenge.
Naida - Thanks.
Amanda - I have two of his books waiting to be read, I'm so looking forward to them after all the reviews I have read recently!
Darla - I'm very intrigued by the audiobook and the idea of different narrators. Daring choice, but I'm glad it works.
Nymeth - Thanks! You too.
Gayla - I am glad you are enjoying the Thirteenth Tale. I have really enjoyed it.
Thanks for stopping by. I must admit that my blog has been greatly sidetracked recently and I am terribly behind on my reviews! Happy reading!
Diane - I am aleady enjoying this challenge and was very excited to buy Mary Shelley's Frankenstein today!
Tanabata - Thanks, I tried for some variety in my pool and can only hope that I might stick to it this year! I really need to get A Fine and Private Place, looking forward to hearing what you think of it. Happy reading!
Glad you signed up for this one. Read American Gods it's awesome!
You betcha!
I've read American Gods, and Dead Until Dark - better than the tv series! - and have The Thirteenth Tale on my list, too! Good choices, Mariel, I hope you like American Gods and have fun with Dead Until Dark!
Susan - I loved the Thirteenth Tale, but must admit that I only enjoyed Dead Until Dark, I think that genre isn't entirely for me. Looking forward to some more Gaiman though!
